Lovely day with brilliant sunshine today, so met up with a guy Pete who resembles Ricky Gervais and the group he had met yesterday. An English brother and sister Tom and Rachel. Tom talks just like Harry Potter, so I had Ricky Gervais on one side and Harry Potter on the other, Scottish Rory who sounded like Dylan Moran, even though he’s a Scot! And Dan from London. They were all early 20’s, and fantastic people. Pete’s mid 30’s. We hobbled barefoot after lunch to the tubing shed as we were tubing down the river. We got our tyre rings and climbed on a tuktuk to take us to the top of the river. The ride in the tuktuk was almost a death-trap. Health and safety? What’s that? NON-existent. At the top of the hill was the first bar, so we piled in with tons more people. We were drinking Beerlao which is the cheap as chips local brew over here, and in every bar you got a free shot of Loa rice whisky which blows your head off. There was a really high rope swing, so all of us except Rachel had a go, and went flying over the river holding on, but me being so upper bodily challenged, slipped at the end of the first swoop and went smack into the river below. Everyone else managed at least 3 swoops. At least there was a guy at the side throwing out a ring to drag you back in. Pete had a go and the boy at the top wasn’t concentrating and pulling the rope back in like he was supposed to, and the rope twisted round Pete’s testicles and back. We were sat watching in horror but laughing at the same time, he managed to manoeuvre himself out and drop to the river. When he joined us, his shorts were ripped, he had a huge rope burn on his side and had almost become a eunuch! We got in our rings and went tubing down the river, and at every bar there are guys pulling us in with ropes as the current is so strong, then we climbed up makeshift bamboo ladders to reach the top. People have died tubing, usually because their too drunk or stoned. There was a guy throwing his guts up in the first bar - and that was only the first one for gods sake!! We stopped at most of the bars on the way down taking our free shots and playing drinking games, and the atmosphere was just buzzing, chatting away to random strangers. The guys were going on the swings and zip lines, me, Rachel and Pete sat them out as we valued our lives too much. We were sharing buckets of vodka and whisky concoctions, and I haven’t laughed so much in ages. We ended up in a bar that was a total mud fest and everyone was slipping and falling over in the mud. Me and Rachel got jumped on by guys giving us bear hugs to cover us in mud, and we all ended up having mud wrestling fights. No one was saved. It was so much fun though. We carried on to a couple more bars and we were gone for 7 hours in total, and when it got pitch black and we couldn’t drink anymore, we decided to head back. We got in our tubes and all held onto each other, but some of us got separated on the way down. I had Tom still held onto me, so he held my hand and swam us down stream. Rachel was shouting ahead to see if we were still together, and we assured her we were fine as it was pitch black and no one could see anyone else. Me and Tom were staring at the backdrop of mountains and all the stars out in the sky, and it was beautiful. We saw the light where we had to get out where the tuktuk was waiting, and Tom did all the swimming to get us there. Full credit to him, he was a total gem, he kept reassuring me he wouldn’t let go and gripped my hand tightly pulling us along. We were laughing our heads off so much saying how we’re never going to forget this day. We managed to clamber out up the bank and pile into the tuktuk with the others to take us back to town, then the heavens opened and the monsoon rains poured down. It was such a fantastic day and the most fun I’ve had in ages. I’ve only managed to accumulate a couple of bruises from the rocks which is pretty good going, (no appointments at Botox Manchester needed). I was expecting a lot more.

Years ago the nerd would, in extreme situations, be hunted down and killed for his not being manly enough; that was in the age of the cave-man nerd—the nerd who, instead of going out hunting with the rest of the men, stayed back at camp and tried to work out what was interesting about a stone shaped like a disc–.

Then came more freakish nerd incantations, and, after great evolution, a race of glasses wearing skinny misfits—their only purpose in life to be picked on for being ‘too clever’. And also to provide folly for muscle-bound jocks in bad <country-region />US</place /></country-region /> movies, of course.

And now here we are in this nerd-friendly age, who would have thought that day would ever come?

Nowadays nerds–even in large numbers, an un thinkable concept when the nerds first escaped from the holes–can walk down the street safe in the knowledge that their intelligence will not be turned against them. Mostly.

Now, unbelievably, web-sites have cropped up which are entirely aimed at the nerd / geek community. One such site is Gizmodo.com and it is smashing. As long as you have a bit of nerd blood in you. Otherwise I suggest you keep well clear!

Finally, getting to the point, Gizmodo reviews and rates products which are a nerd’s wet dream: things like arm-chairs which function as a jet-pack, balloons designed for the most pathetic pair of lungs to blow up, and shopping trolleys built with the finest smooth no-resistance bearings so that even the weakest of nerds can push one around the supermarket and not reveal his true colours.

In other words, if you want to be like Stephen Hawking–as in, if you want a fancy chair–then get your scrawny but to Gizmodo.com!

Holiday news: The designs to take a camping trailer along the south coast are in the works! Although we do need to look into getting some Touring caravan insurance, I am assigning this to Gill…

There are so many great gadgets out there already, and great ones that are coming out soon. Some help us navigate, plan our days, book our holidays and make living life that little bit easier. However, no gadget has impressed me, or made such a big difference in my life as my Intuos 3 Wacom Tablet.

I love this thing, it is simply fantastic. As a budding artist, and a digital one at that, I had to find a tablet that would perform at the highest levels to allow me to do the same. I opted for the A4 sized Intuos 3. Yes, I realise that the Intuos 4 is out now, and I know that it is getting rave reviews, but I am perfectly content with my veteran Intuos 3. Since I bought it nearly two years ago, I have had nothing but reliability from it.

Wacom are the leaders in the tablet industry and have several successful models on sale at the moment. Not only are they great gadgets, that look fantastic on any desk top, but they are top quality tools that help out people in many different occupations, from artists and graphic designers to web designers and photographers. Tablets from Wacom are the best of the best and on its release, my Intuos 3 was the right at the top of the pile. Even now it is still a flawless piece of technology.

From the moment the pen touches the tablet it works, it has never frozen and never broken. It is a brilliant piece of hardware that has allowed me to try and follow my dream of becoming a freelance artist, and will hopefully allow me to grow my talents enough so I can gain the ultimate role in freelance artistry…that of a concept artist. I have also found a couple of other nerdy things that I would quite like being talked about on this enigin PLC blog!

And, as such, you can’t help but wonder what Robert Lindsay, star of the show, might be up to these days (I know, he’s in My Family, but I mean, what’s he up to in his life).

(At least I hope that’s what this person meant; he’s not been forgotten yet! We still love you mate!)

I wonder what Robert Lindsay would have said if he’d have known what would be and asked him before all the critical acclaim: “will you still go ahead with this, Rob, even though people will be hounding you for many years to come? Even though it’ll get you a role in My Family and everyone will love it?”

OK, he may well have still done it; it’s not like he didn’t get his monetary rewards…

But back in the day of Citizen Smith, we had no idea what was coming with the digital media age, did we? Remember that? It was all a mysterious, brand new thing, this TV malarkey—back then a Walkman being small enough to fit in your trouser pocket was in the same unbelievable box as us one day taking commercial flights to the moon…There was no way for anyone to know how big TV and film would eventually become, mainly because its trajectory was shrouded in secrecy and entirely unknown: the technology was ground-breaking, new, frighteningly affordable for the first time. People who had never seen TV before almost thought it could only be a kind of voodoo magic.

So if you’re ever to see a man who looks like Robert Lindsay, don’t give him a hard time about being a bit of a legend, OK? Remember, Citizen Smith was great and My Family is good, but now let the man enjoy his life! Who knows? Maybe a Citizen Smith movie is on the cards?

Saturday 4th April 2009 - the shark dive day!!! Was not feeling nervous at all. I’ve thrown myself off tall ledges into canyons, out of planes and this was not scaring me at all, I was just way too excited. We got the boat when it was still dark at 6.30am, and there were 15 passengers including us. It was a 2 hour ride out to Neptune Island which is where they anchor, as its a seal colony on the Island, which obviously makes the sharks hang around for dinner. Well bugger me - I have NEVER been on such a choppy boat ride in my entire life. Now luckily Damian had had the good sense to get sea sickness tablets, so we popped some in the morning, and we were fine, but half of our passengers were big burly, tattooed Aussie guys who started off taking the piss out of everything, but were soon hanging their heads over the side of the boat chucking their guts up. Not so macho now, ha ha!! There were a couple of people who spent the entire day being sick and lying down in the cabins and not doing the dive at all. It was hilarious seeing all these green faces around us, because us 2 were just raring to go. They provided fantastic food and drinks the whole trip, and the 2 guys got all the bait out, and were chucking tuna in as the sharks love tuna, and loads of blood and guts as sharks can smell 1 drop of blood from miles away. Nothing was happening so we were dreading the thought they wouldn’t come, then 3 hours later 2 turned up. the excitement was overwhelming as these beautiful, amazing creatures took the bait. The guys named them and 1 of them was 4.2metres, the other 4.6 metres. They would take the bait and bite right through the rope and bugger off for a munch, then come back. They were truly awesome. 4 people went in the cage at a time, and me and Damian were in the 3rd group, so we got kitted out in our wet suits and masks and breathing gear. We had 2 sets of weights put on us, one round our shoulders and one round our waist, and it actually makes it really hard to breath. As it was my first time diving it took a while to regulate my breathing as the weights were tightening my chest, but once I had practiced, I lowered myself into the cage - and there he was. My god, words can not describe the feeling of seeing these amazing Great White Sharks in their own environment. They do not survive in captivity, so you can only see them in the wild, and Port Lincoln and South Africa are the only places that do the dives, so we were so god damn privileged it was unreal. The sharks were absolutely huge, and they came right up to the cage to get the bait, then circled round and swam off. we had 45 minutes in the cage, and they disappeared for a while so the other 2 guys got out. I went up to surface to just get some air, then the skipper shouted the shark was back, so I went straight back down and it was just me and Damo in the cage, and these beauties were going for the bait again and circling round, coming right up. There is a gap in the cage so when they come right up, you just step back into the middle so they can’t get you if their noses come through the gap - which has happened (see You tube for footage, Damian kindly sent me the links beforehand). It disappeared again after a while, so I went back up to get some air again, then they shouted it was back, so down again I popped and there he was. Its just so surreal being face to face with these predators, but apparently statistically there is more chance of being killed by a falling coconut on your head than being attacked by a shark. Still don’t fancy my chances outside of the cage mind. After 45 minutes we came up to let the other group go in, and we were just buzzing. Its an experience of a lifetime and I feel so unbelievably lucky to have had the chance to do that. When we got back to dry land we went for dinner in the hotel restaurant again, and neither of us could stop talking about it, but we were swaying for the rest of the night from the boat!! Then left the next day to go back to Adelaide, but it was FANTASTIC.

Sad news guys, the copywriting job for the laser tattoo removal manchester webpage is back off, again. Sometimes I really get sick of being a copywriter!

Tuesday 2nd June 2009 - went on a snorkelling with the Whale Sharks trip. The crew were lovely, and we went on a boat in Ningaloo Reef, and first off started with some snorkelling over the reef. I didn’t really get to see much of the Great Barrier Reef due to bad weather, but most people say the GBR has had its day now, its dying due to all the tourists and Ningaloo Reef is much better. Well I was impressed beyond words. The visibility was amazing, and the coral was spectacular, all different shapes, sizes and textures, and there were so many different fish, schools of small turquoise ones cruising around, larger striped, brightly coloured ones, big fish, little fish (cardboard box!). Then we went further out and there are plane spotters in the air to spot the Whale Sharks. Whale Sharks are actually sharks and not whales, but they are called Whale Sharks due to their enormous size, and they come to Ningaloo Reef between March and June each year to feed on plankton. They are the largest animals in that ocean, and feed on the smallest thing - plankton. They can get up to 20 metres in size and live up to 100 years old. They are known as gentle giants who cruise along minding their own business. As we were sailing along we saw 2 Humpback Whales in the sea, only a very short distance from our boat. Now is the time of year to see so much in the ocean, as the Humpback Whales come in for migration. There was a huge burst of water being blown out of their blowholes, then they would rise out and roll over the ocean, and they travel in 2’s or 3’s. They were enormous, and to see them so close to us was amazing, everyone was ecstatic. Then we went in the water to view the Whale Sharks. We saw 2 of them today, one was 3 metres, and the other was a whopping 8 metres. You have to keep a distance of 3 metres away from their head and 4 metres from their tail, as they swish their tail around, if it hits you, it will hurt. Lots. And we are not there to freak them out. Anyway, first swim was with the 8m giant, and the visibility is fantastic, you can see absolutely everything. This baby was coming straight at me, with a 1 metre long mouth. I thought “Oh god, got to get out of the way, quick!”, so started back peddling, wasn’t working, this huge giant was still coming straight at me, so turned around and swam away for dear life to clear the 3m distance needed, we were so close together it was unreal. Once the distance was accomplished, you stay still and just watch him glide past, then you swim along side him as far as you can keep up. Half of us were on one side of him and half on the other, and the size difference was incredible. There are these tiny humans in flippers, along side this beauty who was MASSIVE!!! We managed to keep up for ages and their not phased by us at all, and there are always a few little fish swimming underneath his belly as they feed off the surface, so wherever he goes, they go. Cute. Got 4 swims with the huge fella and 2 swims with the 3 metre fella. It was amazing beyond words. It was a very humbling experience to share the water and get so close swimming alongside these gentle giants. After lunch on borad we went for another snorkel over the reef, and the water was so warm. I kept expecting to hear the voice of David Attenborough start up “And here we have the species called English snorkelled, this is the female, displaying bright pink fluorescent flippers, and a tendency to suck water into her mask. This species is very common in these waters at this time of year, feeding off seeing the Whale Sharks” It was an incredible experience though, and one I will never forget. They are truly magnificent and beautiful creatures.

I need some input from all of you on this one, I was talking to my friend the other night and she asked me to visit this site on vaser lipo. I suspect she is actually considering getting this done (or she is implying something about myself that I do not appreciate). How do I go about approaching the subject of saying that she shouldn’t really go through with it and she should try a more natural way of taking off weight first. And the funny this is that all of this originally came up because she was talking about wearing a bikini on holiday!

Saturday 8th November 2008 - today me, Shelley and Sarah went Zorbing in Rotorua, which consists of getting in a large hamster type ball which is full of water and rolling down a hill. It looked a bit tame from the top, but us 3 all got in together and its one of the most fun things I’ve done. To get in you fly like superman through the entrance, and Shelley and Sarah managed to get in a standing position inside the ball, but when I came flying in I knocked them off their feet so they couldn’t get back up again. We then went rolling down the hill and it was awesome, it felt really fast and we were just sliding everywhere.

When we got to the bottom we were just laughing so much it was so much fun. Vicky, Matt and Will were watching, and they said the other 2 girls were flying all over the place, and I was in an outstretched superwoman position the entire time. Then we went to go up the mountain on the gondola and went on the sky swing. Again it looked quite lame, but once you get in it and taken to your top position, you begin to laugh hysterically with nerves, then we were let go and went hurtling up through the sky. We all screamed, even Matt sat in the middle of us screamed like a little girl!!

Then we went on the luge which is a racing track on a small car type thing. Anyway, I’ve never done this before and after the 1st corner I crashed, came off and cut all my hand open. I took a 3 minute breather and got back on to persevere. BIG mistake. I tried to take it slightly easy and people were whizzing past, then we got to a big slope which I went shooting down at top speed, tried to brake but no such luck. I hit the side as the bloody thing lost control, and I went flying head first (again in my superwoman position - although obviously not so super) and hit the side and went skidding down on my front for metres. I was in a heap and people stopped to see if I was okay. I couldn’t speak I was in shock (I am a wuss) and I was in so much pain I then burst into tears (really like a girl). The 2 girls who pulled over managed to call for help, and 2 women who worked there came down to patch me up. I managed to slice my hands and both elbows open, also huge cuts and grazes on my legs, stomach and hips, so bandages were put on, they shut the track and carted me back up to the top in a van where the others were waiting for me. I was okay, but my skin is still burning up like crazy where all my skin has come off. But HONESTLY guys, I am actually a good driver in real cars on real roads!!!! Never again. Ever.

Anyway, it was a really fun afternoon apart from the injuries, but hey ho, such is life! But anyone who knows me knows that I am the most clumsiest person ever. I even fall over on flat ground so it really is the story of my life. The girls said they were going back to the start of the track on the cable car, saw me down below wrapped in a blanket with the rescue women, and they shouted “Noush are you okay????”. I shouted back “No, I’m dying!!”. Vicky said they cracked up and said I was obviously fine as I still had my sense of humour, so they shouted they would see me back at the top. When I met them at the top Vicky bought me a cup of tea and chocolate bar to cheer me up. Bless her.

Sunday 9th November - woke up feeling like I’ve gone 10 rounds with Mike Tyson. I have a bruise and swelling the size of a golf ball on my left shin and a swelling the size of a golf ball on my right hip, a 10cm gash on my stomach, gashes on my feet, hands, arms, elbows and hips and it really hurts!! The girls have been great and carried my bags for me and lugged them around as I’m finding it hard to walk let alone carry a backpack, but as I am truly hardcore I went skydiving anyway. We went to the centre in Taupo and did a 15,000 feet tandem jump. I did a 12,000 ft jump in 2005, but this was way better. I had the best instructor called Dale, he was an absolute little sweetheart, a real gem, and we got the DVD done too, and we were able to pick 3 music tracks to go on, so I picked ’I’m Alive’ by Pearl Jam for the descent as I thought it was quite fitting. The jump was awesome, 65 seconds of freefall before whizzing around checking out the sights of Lake Taupo which is the size of Singapore!! It was the best feeling ever, absolutely amazing, and Dale was so cool. We were all on such a high that we had done it, and poor Will is scared of heights, and he was first out of the plane. Afterwards he had such a rush back on land that he had to lie down before passing out. I was the only one who’s jumped before so I knew what to expect, but MY GOD - everyone should try it at least once in their life!! We then pitched up at our hostel, on such a high. Awesome. Truly truly awesome.

Friday 21st November 2008 - got up this morning and booked in for the bungy at 9.45am. This is the highest bungy in NZ, and the worlds 3rd highest jump at 134 meters. I have always sworn on my life that I would never do a bungy as the thought scared the living daylights out of me, I would have rather cuddled a tarantula - and I am an arachnophobic, so I though hell why not, and if I’m going to do it, lets just jump in and do the highest one possible. Smart move. We drove out there, and then me and Shelley were the last ones to take the cable car as we weighed less than everyone else, so we watched people do it, and I can not describe the pure terror and fear I felt. I felt like I was in a goldfish bowl, my heart was pounding, I was almost hyperventilating, and I felt weak all over. Shelley was really good and made me feel better, and we got to the jumping point in the middle of the canyon, they were playing some pumping tunes, so it totally took my mind of it and I was just dancing around the hut, watching the others jump. When it got to my turn, the heart palpations started. I was 2nd to last - NOT the good moment for being the smallest, and they got me in a chair and strapped up my ankles and waist. The guys were really nice and said the more scared you are, the better the after feeling. I had to shuffle to the platform where the cold air hit my face, and I did not look down. They are not allowed to push you, you have to jump yourself. This was one of the biggest fears of my life, and they counted down to 3, and I just for a second thought that I could not do it, but when they got to the count of 1, I just launched myself of the platform, and plummeted headfirst 134 metres down. My god, it was terrifying, but truly amazing. I was so proud of myself for conquering that fear, and as I bounced back up, all I could do was whoop and scream with joy and elation. You have to pull a chord to pull yourself back into a sitting position before they hoist you back up. Now I already knew I would fail at this. I pulled the chord several times and it would not work, so they had to hoist me back upside down. I managed to lift my head up and clung onto that rope for dear life. Even if I had wanted to let go I could not have, my hand was clenched round it for dear life, it was NOT moving. When I got back up the guy said I could let go and I was like “no way”, and I was just trying to catch my breath the whole way up my body was so pumped full of adrenaline. Awesome, truly awesome beyond words. Me and Shelley managed to have a few hours to calm down, then we went back into town and met Vicky as we were all doing the Shotover Canyon swing. Nothing like scaring the crap out of yourself twice in one day. This is the swing that Jack Osbourne did on his TV show ’Adrenaline Junkie’. We got there and the heart palpitations started again. There are several ways you can throw yourself off, and I chose the chair. Basically its 109 metres up, you have a 60 metres freefall, then you go into a 200m swing at 150km/hour speed. The guys found out I had done the Nevis bungy that morning, so they wound me up and terrorised me. They told me to look over the edge then pretended to throw me off, and caught me at the last minute, so I’m screaming like a little girl. They then strap me to a chair which is facing backwards, and its like when you swing backwards on your chair at school and loose balance. Again I was terrified beyond words - why do we find torturing ourselves so much fun???? They leant me over and told me to slowly overbalance - this is after winding me up saying my straps were too loose and I was not harnessed in properly - Kiwi sense of humour (warped). I was trying to catch my breath, psyching myself up and counting to 3. I leant back to let myself go, and the bastards caught me an pulled me back to make me do it all over again. The second time I just leant back and that was it - off I went. I spun over in the chair and went swinging towards the floor screaming my head off, but again it was the most amazing feeling, and when your left swinging you just end up laughing your head off, on such the ultimate high. They then hoisted me back up and it was so cool - loved it!! Jack Osbourne eat your heart out!!!! To celebrate after we went for the famous Queenstown Ferg burger (granted I had never actually heard of it before, but our drivers highly recommended it - good choice), then went for a few vodkas. I say a few, but I’ve just got back, its 3.30am now and our bus leaves at 6.30am Oooops!!!
Attention all, the italy ski bookings for our annual trip have been sorted out. I need part of the downpayment by this Friday.

Interviewing for that job can be one of the most scariest things to do if you are not prepared. Also, lack of preparation can cause you to lose the chance of getting that job. Below you will find some tips to help you build up your skills and confidence so you can ace that job interview.

The greatest impression you can make on any new potential boss is to know a little something about their company background. Take the time to do a bit of research on the company before you arrive so you have something to talk about. This could include sales statistics, bios of executives, trends and more. Research can be easily done over the Internet. Most businesses have their own Web site, so go through it thoroughly.

Polish up your interviewing skills. It is quite common for people to nervous during an interview. By preparing yourself, you can tame some of this anxiousness which will make you feel and look more confident. Some ways to do this is to list your strengths and experience. Write down why you think you are a good candidate for the job and what you have to offer. Practice what you will say out loud until it flows naturally.

You can also research the typical interview questions and practice your answers. Sit with a friend and role play. You can even sit in front of a mirror so you can watch your body language and how your poster looks.

Be sure to show up to your interview at least 5 minutes early and watch how you dress. You are making a first impression here, so dress the part. Men can wear dark blue, black or grey suits with a white shirt and tie. Women would suit well with either a pants suit or skirt and blouse. Keep jewelry and makeup to a minimum, nails clean and perfume/cologne light.

Last, be ready to ask questions. They will always ask you if you have questions. You better have some because this looks good. This is your time to turn it around and interview them. Do not ask about pay, benefits, 401K or anything like that. Your questions should be more about company growth, where they see themselves in 5 years, what kind of responsibilities would you have and things like that. The best interview questions would be questions related to your research on the company. This will let them know that you took that extra step into learning more about them.

These are the basic tips you can follow. A good idea would be to go on practice interviews in places that you have no interest in working for, just to build up your confidence and skills. This personal interaction will help to control your anxiety levels and prepare you for the real interviews.

Speaking of hiring and firing, I was chatting to my mate the other week and he has just got a amazing new gig at an hr software company. Well done David, I have just had a look at the website and that is amazing!

What a terrible and tragic story this is. A man stabbed to death because he tried to stop two thieves.

If you saw a young woman having her handbag snatched would you be able to just stand and do nothing? Or would you do what this brave man did and give chase? Until it happens to you (which I hope it never does) there is no way of knowing quite how you would react. We are always warned that it is safer to leave the authorities to handle situations like this but sometimes this is easier said than done. After all, we are all human beings and we all act on instincts.

Now I just hope that the police manage to catch the two men responsible for this awful attack; and that it is sooner rather than later. People like this are too dangerous to be wandering around our streets. Who knows what else they might do? And next time it could turn out to be even worse.

My heart really does go out to the families of Sukhwinder Singh. He gave his life trying to help someone. It may be that he has died as a hero, but that will not make it any easier for the people he has left behind.

Sukhwinder may have acted rashly by chasing the thieves but what he did was incredibly brave. If it had just been one man that he had pursued then it would have heroic but to go after two was amazing. I wonder what our society would be like if there were more people who were so willing to help others who were in trouble. One thing is for sure, there would be a lot fewer crimes committed. If a thief had to worry about all the people who may try to catch him, then surely he would think twice.

By the way the Ski chalet holidays booking has been looked after everybody (by yours truley I may add), I am really excited about our long weekend trip. I need part of the overall cost by early next week, so everyone please pay me!
