Being A Legend

Citizen Smith, what an absolute classic that show was! And, as such, you can’t help but wonder what Robert Lindsay, star of the show, might be up to these days (I know, he’s in My Family, but I mean, what’s he up to in his life).

(At least I hope that’s what this person meant; he’s not been forgotten yet! We still love you mate!)

I wonder what Robert Lindsay would have said if he’d have known what would be and asked him before all the critical acclaim: “will you still go ahead with this, Rob, even though people will be hounding you for many years to come? Even though it’ll get you a role in My Family and everyone will love it?”

OK, he may well have still done it; it’s not like he didn’t get his monetary rewards…

But back in the day of Citizen Smith, we had no idea what was coming with the digital media age, did we? Remember that? It was all a mysterious, brand new thing, this TV malarkey—back then a Walkman being small enough to fit in your trouser pocket was in the same unbelievable box as us one day taking commercial flights to the moon…There was no way for anyone to know how big TV and film would eventually become, mainly because its trajectory was shrouded in secrecy and entirely unknown: the technology was ground-breaking, new, frighteningly affordable for the first time. People who had never seen TV before almost thought it could only be a kind of voodoo magic.

So if you’re ever to see a man who looks like Robert Lindsay, don’t give him a hard time about being a bit of a legend, OK? Remember, Citizen Smith was great and My Family is good, but now let the man enjoy his life! Who knows? Maybe a Citizen Smith movie is on the cards? (Though I can’t really see him in slippers and pipe mode myself…)
